What Changes a Person?
Throughout his address, Commissioner Apag encouraged the graduates to pause and appreciate not only what they had accomplished but also who they had become throughout their journey at the University. He emphasized that graduation marks more than the completion of academic requirements; it celebrates the transformation of individuals shaped by learning, perseverance, experiences, relationships, and time.
Addressing the graduates, Commissioner Apag highlighted the enduring role of universities in shaping lives through excellence in education, research, innovation, and community engagement. As they enter a rapidly evolving world, he reminded the Class of 2026 that uncertainty should not be feared but embraced as an opportunity to grow, adapt, and lead with courage.
The Commissioner likewise challenged the graduates to focus not only on the question, "What do you want to be?" but, more importantly, "Who do you want to become?" He underscored that while careers, titles, and ambitions may change over time, one's character, integrity, compassion, and commitment to serving others remain the true measures of success.
Drawing from years of experience in higher education, Commissioner Apag shared three timeless reminders: never be afraid of uncertainty, protect your character more than your reputation, and never stop becoming. He encouraged the graduates to remain lifelong learners, to embrace personal growth with humility, and to use their education to uplift others and create meaningful change in their communities.
In one of the most heartfelt moments of his message, Commissioner Apag invited the graduates to remember the parents, families, teachers, mentors, and loved ones whose sacrifices and unwavering support made this milestone possible. He reminded them that no success is ever achieved alone and that gratitude remains one of the greatest signs of an educated person.
As the graduates begin a new chapter, Commissioner Apag left them with the answer to the question that framed his address: what changes a person is time and what we choose to do with it. He challenged the Class of 2026 to move forward with courage, gratitude, and purpose, never ceasing to grow into the leaders, professionals, and individuals they are called to become.
"Time transforms potential into achievement. What you choose to do with it will define the person you become."
